Dr Kune Gabriel
General Surgeon
Orthopedic Specialist


Dr. Kune Gabriel is a distinguished General Surgeon and Orthopedic Specialist, currently focusing on Orthopedic Surgery. Born in 1978 in Monokam (Ambum Valley), Enga Province, Dr. Gabriel's family moved to Port Moresby in 1979. He began his primary education at St. Francis Primary School Koki from 1985 to 1990, followed by high school at Tokarara High School from 1991 to 1994, and secondary education at Gordons Secondary School from 1995 to 1996.
Dr. Gabriel commenced his tertiary education at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) in 1997, where he completed his Science Foundation and earned a Bachelor's degree in Science, majoring in Geology, in 2000. In 2002, he was accepted into the MBBS program at the School of Medicine and Health Science, completing his degree in 2005.
Following his graduation, Dr. Gabriel began his residency training at Modilon General Hospital in Madang, where he served for two years. He then worked as a registrar at Mendi General Hospital from 2007 to 2009 before returning to Madang in 2010 as a Surgical Registrar.
In 2011, Dr. Gabriel was accepted into the MMED training program in Surgery at the School of Medicine and Health Science (SMHS), UPNG. This four-year program included rotations at Angau General Hospital in Lae in 2013 and Port Moresby General Hospital in 2014. He graduated as a General Surgeon in 2015 and subsequently worked at Alotau General Hospital in Milne Bay Province for a year before returning to Modilon General Hospital in 2016.
In 2019, Dr. Gabriel pursued Higher Diploma Training in Orthopedics, moving to Port Moresby General Hospital in 2020 and completing his training in 2023. During this period, he had attachments at Taiwan's Changhua Christian Hospital and attended short courses in Melbourne and Brisbane.
Currently based in Madang with the Madang Provincial Health Authority, Dr. Gabriel serves as the Acting Surgical Coordinator and an Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon. His work primarily involves open reduction and internal fixation of limb fractures, external fixation, hip surgery (including hemiarthroplasty and dynamic hip screw procedures), spinal decompression, and congenital talipes correction surgery. Additionally, he treats and manages trauma wounds and bone infections (osteomyelitis) on a daily basis.
